With all these England injuries we need some Chiefs

England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster has added nine players to his training squad for this Autumn Internationals following injuries from Round 2 of the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup.

Coming in are flanker Dave Ewers, number 8 Thomas Waldrom and inside centre Henry Slade and the Exeter Chiefs trio come in as injury cover for Wasps James Haskell (Viral Infection), Northampton Saints Luther Burrell (injured hand) and Saracens Billy Vuniploa (Concussion).

Burrell will be getting a specialist assessment on Monday and Tuesday on his right hand. Haskell is getting over a viral infection while Vunipola is undergoing the return to play protocol after suffering a concussion and with Sarries team mate Will Fraser, who’s also suffering with a concussion it’s a huge opportunity for Ewers.

Joining the West Country trio are Ben Foden and Alex Waller (Northampton Saints), Bath Rugby’s Anthony Watson and Henry Thomas along with Matt Kvesic (Gloucester Rugby) and Richard Wigglesworth (Saracens) will be going to Pennyhill Park.

Thomas comes in for his Bath team mate David Wilson (Calf) while Waller is cover for Joe Marler (Thigh) and will be doing limited training, but both will be expected to be fit by this weekend.

Lancaster anticipated injuries to happen, but is excited seeing his squad start training “We always anticipated bringing in additional players following the European games, either to cover injuries or for training.

“Luther will be assessed by a specialist over the next 48 hours and our medics are in close contact with Saints so we’ll know more in a few days but it’s great to able to bring in Henry (Slade). Billy (Vunipola) will undergo the return to play protocol with us and will resume training once he has completed that.

“Injuries are inevitable but we are excited about he group we have in camp. We are raring to go and looking forward to getting out on the training pitch tomorrow.”

A lot of people will happy to see the Exeter trio finally included in the England set up as Waldrom is one of the best number eights in the Aviva Premiership since moving to Sandy Park this season. I’m also very happy to see Slade in the England set up as I believe he should have been involved in the original England team.

However, even though I like Watson and think he is a fantastic young player the fact David Strettle still hasn't been called up is very odd and I’m getting a feeling it’s something more personal then professional because the Saracens winger is the best in the Premiership.
