Review of Aviva Premiership Round 2



Harlequins 0 – 39 Saracens
 
It was Friday fright night at the Stoop as the Charlie Hodgson came to town and scored 22 points.

It started so well as a fantastic last man tackle from Mike Brown stopped a brilliant move by Saracens and after a couple of penalties from Hodgson it was chargedown Charlie came to get the first try of the match stopping Nick Evans’ kick for a simply run under the posts.

After the half Sarries continued their dominance with two more penalties from the veteran fly half and fullback Alex Goode also added from his boot. It was only time till the away side got their second try of the game after a fumble from Quins was kicked away with winger Chris Ashton flying down the flank to beat Marland Yarde to score for Saracens.

Will Fraser got the final try late on from a rolling maul to end the nightmare for Harlequins.

Bath Rugby 53 – 26 London Welsh

London Welsh looked to have continued from last weeks hammering by conceding another 50 points the only up side is they got their first point of the season.

Debutant Chris Cook kicked off the scorefest at The Rec with his first ever Aviva Premiership try after just one minute.

Welsh did reply quickly with Pete Browne getting the first points on the scoreboard for the Exiles and tries from Semesa Rokoduguni and Jonathan Joseph for Bath while Seb Stegmann scored for Welsh before the half.

Bath got the bonus point after half time with Leroy Houston scores, however the visitors came straight back with Stegmann making a great break from his own 5 metre line with fullback Seb Jewell racing though a gap to touch down.

Welsh tried to break from their own half again, but Rokoduguni intercepted to score his second of the game.

Then an overthrown lineout was picked up by Lachlan McCaffrey to score his first try in England and gave London Welsh their first points of the campaign, but it was Bath who finished the stronger with Joseph getting his second try of the game and Carl Fearns finished things off.

Gloucester Rugby 34 – 27 Sale Sharks

After the horrors of last weeks game against Northampton Saints, Gloucester gave their fans something to cheer about narrowly beating Sale at home.

It didn’t start too well for Gloucester as Danny Cipriani tore open the Cherry and White’s defence with Tom Arscott scoring in the first minute.

Cipriani was at it again with a chip – and – collect over the defence and his run opened a big gap for scrum half Chris Cusiter who got through Charlie Sharples and James Hooks tackle to score his first try for Sale. Once again Cipriani was involved as it was his smart tap – and – go and quick pass to Tom Brady, who popped the ball to Luke McLean who scored in the corner.

After the half Gloucester came to life and after Greig Laidlaw scored his fourth penalty of the game, Jonny May got the opening try of their season.

Cipriani put Sale back into the lead, but after the hour mark the home side went regained the lead with May turning provider passing the ball to Rob Cook, who scored in the corner and once they score a penalty try Gloucester put the result all but beyond doubt.

Cipriani did finish off his brilliant afternoon with a solo try.

Exeter Chiefs 20 – 24 Leicester Tigers

Leicester was only able to edge pass a strong looking Exeter Chiefs.

Once the Tigers were reduced to 14 men with Vereniki Goneva sent to the sin bin for a high tackle the Chiefs made the extra man count with Dave Ewers scoring his second of the season.

The visitors replied with a brilliant grubber kick from Freddie Burns to Anthony Allen to score in his first game of the season.

Haydn Thomas gave the Chiefs the lead again after some pick – and – goes the scrum half found a little gap to score.

After Gareth Steenson and Burns exchanged penalties and even though scrum half Ben Young did get a try for the Tigers it did look like Steenson might of won it for the Chiefs but Owen Williams got the killer blow with his penalty.

Wasps 20 – 16 Northampton Saints

 
Newcastle Falcons 18 – 20 London Irish

Newcastle’s first Aviva Premiership match on their new 3G pitch will be one to forget losing narrowly to Irish.

Joshua Furno scored the first points of the match with a strong driving maul from the Falcons and a couple of Shane Geraghty gave the Exiles the lead into half time.

After the half centre Fergus Mulchrone got the first try of London Irish’s season however the Falcons got back into the game with Irish going down to 14 men with Tom Court sin-binned it was another driving maul was finished off by Scott Wilson.

The killer blow came after the hour mark with fullback Andy Fenby scoring after some great passing by the away side. However, there was some late drama at Kingston Park with Juan Pablo Socino scoring a penalty and a try from Sinoti Sinoti got the score back down to just two points.

If Socino scored his conversion he could give the Falcons a draw, but it hit the post which left Irish going home with a narrow win.
